BAM Does BottleRock 2017

Kicking off the weekend was Troubadour 77 with their noon set on Friday. They are comprised of two married couples, Kassie and Austin Wayand and Nathan Chappell (drummer). Grammy award-winning singer-songwriters, Monty Powell and his wife Anna Wilson started the band specifically wanting to cater to the likes of the middle aged music lovers. their music sounds like a combination of Indigo Girls meets the Eagles. Anna comes from Pennsylvania and Monty from Atlanta. Monty has collaborated  with Keith Urban and the couples reside in Utah. I asked where the name Troubadour 77 originates from and Anna told me that it comes from where live music  got its mojo…the famous venue in LA, the Troubadour…and 77 was a very rich year for music.

Grammy Award-Winning Songwriters Form New Band Appealing to Musically Marginalized Boomers and Generation Xers

Salt Lake City-Based Troubadour 77 to Release EP Featuring New Music with Classic Rock Sound

Seeking to revolutionize the youth-dominated music industry, Grammy award-winning songwriters Anna Wilson (piano/lead vocals) and Monty Powell (guitar/vocals) have formed Troubadour 77 (aka T77). The band’s mission is to create new music with classic rock influences that appeal to older Generation Xers and Baby Boomers, two generations largely neglected by contemporary artists. Having been staples of the Nashville music scene for years, the husband-wife duo is now based in Salt Lake City with fellow band members Nathan Chappell (drums) and another pair of husband-wife musical collaborators Austin Weyand (guitar) and Kassie Weyand (bass). Troubadour 77 will release their “Troubadour 77 EP,” a collection of four songs written by Wilson and Powell, on April 7, 2017. It will serve to introduce the band to older classic rock fans marginalized by the industry and left longing for original music that resonates with them. Pre-Sale begins exclusively at iTunes on Friday, March 24, 2017.

Appealing to the modern music consumer who craves new content and continual engagement, the EP will kick off what T77 is calling a “progressive album” that will be completed over the next seven months by releasing one new song on the first Friday of each month, leading up to the full-length album that will be fully packaged and available on December 1, 2017.

Wilson says, “We like that we can leak songs out a little at a time to build anticipation for the full album. It feels like a win-win for listeners who like to get their music one song at a time, and also for the old school fan who appreciates a beginning-to-end listening experience. For those wanting the complete “progressive album” in advance, it will be available for download when the EP is released on April 7 exclusively at Pledge Music, through the purchase of an Access Pass.

Collectively, Wilson and Powell have written a dozen #1 songs and countless album cuts featured on more than 70 million records sold worldwide and have co-produced unique projects that pay tribute to The Eagles, Billy Joel and the Countrypolitan era of music. Powell was a driving force in establishing Keith Urban’s career as the country star’s early producer and top collaborator, earning many prestigious awards for the songs they co-wrote. A critically acclaimed recording artist, Wilson has also written songs for Lady Antebellum, Reba McEntire, Billy Ray Cyrus and penned the International theme song for Habitat for Humanity International.

“As Troubadour 77, we are writing and performing new music with a sound reminiscent of the classic singer-songwriter and California country artists that helped define our generation,” explains Monty Powell. “We hope to inspire listeners to reflect on and celebrate where they are in their lives while reducing the need to rely entirely on the nostalgia of a bygone era for their entertainment.”

While incorporating a classic rock style, T77’s subject matter evokes today’s political and social issues, as well as the circumstances and perspectives of an older, wiser audience of music lovers. In the spirit of 1960s and ‘70s protest music, Wilson and Powell have no qualms about addressing hot topics like gun violence and control in the EP’s focus track, “I Got a Gun” and immigration controversies in “Open Home.” “Steal Forever” speaks to the challenges of recapturing the magic of lost love, and “Troubadour” is dedicated to storytelling, something this songwriting team has proven to be so successful in doing throughout their accomplished careers.

Troubadour 77 has already shared billings with established acts like Brandi Carlile, and will kick off their summer tour at the sold out BottleRock Festival in Napa, CA over Memorial Day weekend. Meanwhile, the “Troubadour 77 EP” will be available at iTunes, Spotify, and all digital retailers. For more info, visit

We love this idea: a Grammy Award-winning songwriter is producing new music that sounds like what we used to — and still do — love! He is Monty Powell, who began his career with a jingle for an Allstate Insurance commercial but eventually worked in the big-time world of country music. Now, having moved his home from Nashville, Tennessee to Huntsville, Utah, Monty tells BoomerCafé about his quest to transform the industry by targeting the boomer generation.

I was three-years-old when the Beatles took the stage on that historic night of February 9th, 1964. I was ten in 1971 when the Allman Brothers made their unforgettable live recordings at Fillmore East. In 1977, my wife and collaborator Anna Wilson was five when Rumours and Hotel California came out. I am now 55-years-old, and Anna and I have just started a new rock band, Troubadour 77.

Troubadour 77 lead singer Anna Wilson in the center. Monty Powell on the right.

Our vision is to create new music reminiscent of the classic singer-songwriter and California Country artists that so many of us have on our playlists: Jackson Browne, The Eagles, James Taylor, and Fleetwood Mac to name a few. I have spent my whole adult life in the music business as a songwriter and producer, writing chart-topping songs for artists like Keith Urban, Tim McGraw, Lady Antebellum and others. But after years of facilitating other artists’ visions, I decided it was time to come out from behind the glass, time to play my guitar and sing the type of music that Anna and I (and our contemporaries) love.

Anna Wilson of Troubadour 77.

But it’s not so easy to find. I don’t like hip-hop, and teen pop is useless to me. I remember the feeling the first time I heard “Stairway to Heaven” and “The Pretender” and know that if someone would make some new music that embodies those sensibilities, the sense of discovery and passion can be reignited in a generation that has been musically marginalized for too long.

“Open Home,” a music video from Troubadour 77.

The music business is and has always been focused almost exclusively on young people. It is an irony impossible to miss. If you start early, you can stay in the spotlight as long as you want to. Look at Mick Jagger and Sir Paul, still rocking. This formula, that has now been around for generations, has left baby boomers these choices: either get down with our kids’ and grandkids’ music, or wear ourselves out listening to “Free Bird” for the thousandth time.

Monty Powell

So, I asked, “Why can’t there be new songs and new music for us? Recordings that sound familiar, lyrics that you not only can understand, but speak to where we are at in life and not just to kids?” So, we started a rock band.

It’s not a hobby or a weekend warrior cover band. It’s an attempt to change the culture and conversation about who gets to have a seat at the table in this art form. Actors, directors, novelists, painters, and all other sorts of artisans are not saddled by the myopic worship of youth the way music is. There has been an unspoken rule, with few exceptions, that you can’t enter the conversation from the second half of your life.

I want to prove it wrong.

Changing long-standing norms is always an uphill battle, but I feel that our boomer generation is tired of only refilling the cup with nostalgia. We are ready to embrace music made specifically for us again.

Troubadour 77’s four-song “The Progressive Album EP” will be released April 7th. Following that, an additional song per month will be released leading up to the full album release on December 1st. Their recordings are available at iTunes, Amazon Music and Spotify.
